Moving to Hialeah, Florida? If you're on an accelerated timetable (perhaps because the local hospital really needed an xray protection engineer or because a relative fell ill) you may not have had time to do a lot of research into the city. Therefore once you get settled in you'll find that there are a lot of things you don't know regarding city services like garbage collection, policing, or animal control. Let this article serve to familiarize you with what services the city of Hialeah provides and how to contact them if you need to.
Emergency
Like any self respecting North American city, Hialeah hosts its own police and fire departments. Police, fire and ambulance services can be summoned in an emergency by dialing 9-1-1 just like you would have from your old London, Ontario animal hospital. For non emergencies (such as fire prevention questions or to file police reports) the Hialeah Fire Department can be contacted at (305) 883-6900 and the Hialeah Police Department at (305) 687-2525 between 8:30am and 5:00pm.
Education and Transit
Though it's a small city Hialeah has its own public transportation system. To see the route map and the running times for the buses (which vary by day of the week) visit www.hialeahfl.gov/dep/transit or call (305) 681-5757. If you want to keep in touch with your old Burlington lawyer friends you might take the bus to the library. There are six. For more information on the library's educational programs, you can call the main branch (JFK) at 305-821-2700.
Public Works
This is the department to contact if you need help with utility locating (i.e. not hitting sewer pipes if you have to dig up your yard to install something), garbage and recycling pickup, or water mains. For trouble with water or sewers call (305) 556-3800 while solid waste pickup inquiries are handled at (305) 883-8059. You'll also have to contact the city if you need building permits or have questions about city ordinance codes. Permits are the purview of planning and development at (305) 883-8075.
Streets and Parks
Street and park maintenance are important for cities, because aesthetics are what attract new residents and visitors and improve quality of life. If you notice any city facilities such as park structures, street lamps, or wastewater pumps that need maintenance call (305) 687-2620. For more information about city events call 305-889-5701 and for more information about the parks themselves or recreation centers, phone 305-687-2650.
